Olympic Stadium

In the summer of 2002, with contraction looming over the Montreal Expos and a strike looming over baseball, Matt and I hit the road for Montreal to see a game in what could have been the last baseball series ever to be played in Olympic Stadium.Olympic Stadium was a ‘unique’ baseball atmosphere.  First, the stadium looks like a spaceship from outside and inside.  Its one odd piece of architecture.  Its also incredibly loud inside, partly because of the dome, and partly because the speakers which hang all over the stadium constantly bombard the audience with noise.  Matt and I were fairly certain the speakers were also flooding the stadium with fake crowd cheers to make up for the paltry crowd on hand.

The game, a match up between  the Expos and the Padres, was a yawner up until the 8th inning.  That was when Wil Coredero, who was replacing Vladimir Guerrero in right field that night, dropped an easy 2-out fly ball and opened the flood gates.  The Padres scored 3 runs and took a 2 run lead.  The inning was punctuated by a streaker who ran out on the field in nothing but black briefs, evading the overweight security guards, and sliding into second base.

In the 9th Trevor Hoffman came in and closed out the game, surrendering a meaningless solo homerun.Â
